The 2nd Meeting on bar dynamics was held at the EDF R&D laboratory at Chatou on April 17, 2018. This event brought together approximately forty experts in the field, young researchers, and PhD and Masters students, from partner laboratories in France (ISTREA Lyon, CITERES à Tours, IGE à Grenoble, CEREGE à Aix-en-Provence) and in Europe (Université de Trento en Italie, IHE Delf aux Pays-Bas, ETH Zürich et EPFL Lausanne en Suisse). In addition, many members of the Saint-Venant Hydraulics Laboratory and LNHE of EDF R&D also had the opportunity to participate!

The morning was focused on presentations by young researchers studying bar dynamics, including both field experiments, and numerical and physical modeling approaches. The first session concentrated on sediment transport processes in alternating bar systems, and interactions between bar dynamics and vegetation were the focus of the second session in the morning.

In the afternoon, the participants came together to discuss important questions that arose during presentations in the morning: for example, how do dunes interact with bars? What role do vegetation roots play in riverine morphodynamics? How do freely migrating bars transition to stable bar systems (hybrid systems)?

This event was an excellent opportunity to exchange in the scientific community the current research progress and challenging questions that remain!

The program of presentations is available ici.
