Physical and Numerical Roughness quantification in 2D flooding models

Présentation

Durée : 18 mois

The Saint-Venant Hydraulics Laboratory (LHSV) is a joint research unit between Ecole des Ponts ParisTech (ENPC) and Electricité de France R&D (EDF R&D). The laboratory has a unique position in the field of applied free surface environmental hydraulics and fluid mechanics, at the interface between academy and industry.

We are seeking to fill a 18-month post-doctoral position on Physical and Numerical Roughness Quantification in 2D flooding models. The aim of this post-doctoral position is to design an experimental device for simulating flood roughness effects induced by different type of soil occupation and extreme flooding (from slightly overtopping events to watershed events of return period of 10 000 years). After a comprehensive state of the art of the existing literature (empirical and analytical roughness models), the first task of this research consists in the development of an experimental set-up for the studying of the main type of soils (scrubs and/or herbaceous vegetation, arable lands, pastures, and so on) roughness behavior, with a focus on the physical characteristics of large French Basins (i.e. the Loire River Basins) and for different flood conditions (from slightly to high overtopping of dykes). Once the experimental set-up is defined a validated, the experimental results will be analyzed with the objective to develop a new methodology for roughness consideration in two dimensional numerical models. This new methodology will be implemented in the numerical tool, within the framework of the scientific computational system TELEMAC (open-source code, www.opentelemac.org).

Successful applicant should, by the start of the appointment, have a Ph.D., or equivalent experience in Hydraulics Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Sciences or Applied Mathematics. A first experience in experimental research and the use and development of high performance numerical computation codes are highly desirable. The researcher will be employed by Ecole des Ponts ParisTech (ENPC). Salary and benefits will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Contacts

The Saint-Venant Hydraulics Laboratory (LHSV) is actively engaged in fundamental and applied research. Research activities cover a variety of themes including waves transformation and action on structures and coastal metocean, numerical and physical modeling of free-surface environmental hydraulics, and sediment transport and morphodynamics, water quality and interaction with the living.

The LHSV has access to a unique variety of facilities, such as 8 000 m2 of experimental facilities and high-performance Computational Fluid Dynamics models for hydrodynamic and transport processes, including the open-source TELEMAC modelling system (www.opentelemac.org). The LHSV is located on the EDF Lab site in Chatou (6 Quai Watier, 78400 Chatou, France), about 15 km away from Paris downtown.
